The South African wine industry proactively supports conservation. Biodiversity guidelines have now been written into the guidelines for the Integrated Production of Wine (IPW), the industry’s handbook for sustainable farming. A compulsory system introduced in 1998, the IPW focuses on every stage in the production process, from environmental impact studies and the correct preparation of soil to the use of recyclable packaging. The neck seal also signifies a commitment to social sustainability. South Africa has a dark history of oppression and today there are tremendous movements to break down barriers and redress historical wrongs. Part of this work includes ongoing education drives that have seen people from disadvantaged communities emerge as winegrowers and winemakers in the Cape wine lands for the first time. Historically these communities provided the labor force, but are now moving into the management and ownership positions. The entire South African wine industry worked together with Wines of South Africa (WOSA) to create an innovative top quality wine brand - FUNDI - and ensure that 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this wine are use to train people from disadvantaged segments of society.

The South African wine industry dates back to the first vineyard planted in 1655 when the Dutch East India Company established a supply station in what is now Cape Town. The wines were intended to ward off scurvy among sailors during their voyages along the spice route. The Dutch had little wine tradition, and between 1680 and 1690 with the help of the French Huguenots, the wine industry began to flourish.

History Of South African Wine

The first half of the 19th Century brought prosperity to the industry. The British occupation, in addition to England's war with France, created a large new market for Cape wines and production increased dramatically. In 1861 peace between England and France devastated the industry, and twenty years later the disease phylloxera sent the industry into further chaos.

In 1918 Charles Kohler's efforts led to the creation of the KWV Co-operative. An umbrella organization that brought stability to its members placing it on the road to growth and prosperity. However, for most of the 20th Century, the South African wine industry received minimal international attention. Its isolation was further exacerbated by the boycotts of South African products in protest to Apartheid. It wasn't until the 1990's that the world export market opened up and South African wines began to experience a renaissance.

South African producers quickly adopted new viticultural and winemaking technologies. International Winemakers brought their influences to South Africa and focused on traditional varieties such as Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay. Winemaking traditions of South Africa often represent a hybridization of Old World winemaking with those of the New World. Winemakers from France, Spain, and California have all brought new techniques and styles to South Africa viticulture.

Today traditional grape varieties in South Africa and the adoption of International varieties mean that the top four red plantings are Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinotage and Merlot and the white grape varieties of Chenin Blanc, Colombard, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.

MonkeyBiz focuses on gender empowerment by training women in the traditional art of beading which allows them to make traditional beaded crafts that are sold into South Africa’s thriving tourist industry. Carrol’s ongoing support to MonkeyBiz has manifested in the provision of retail space for the sale of these products. Quorum decided to participate by making a financial contribution to MonkeyBiz from every bottle of wine that is imported to Canada. There are 450 women currently employed and empowered through their work with MonkeyBiz and they are now their family’s primary breadwinners.
